Annual Butte Lawrence County Fair set to begin

NISLAND, SD – The annual Butte/Lawrence County Fair held at the historic Nisland Fairgrounds wants you to know that from talent shows, to livestock shows, to music shows, there’s something for everyone as the fair gets underway Tuesday, July 31, 2018, lasting through Saturday, August 4, 2018.

It all kicks off Tuesday at 8 a.m. through 1 p.m. with open class non-livestock exhibits and the set-up of the individual and club booths. The open class horse show begins at 2 p.m.

By Wednesday, August 1st the Butte/Lawrence County Fair is in full swing. Open class non-livestock judging will be conducted throughout the day, followed by the sheep dog trials and running ducks, getting underway at 4:00p.m.  Swine shows at 6:00p.m.

A new event on Wednesday is the Pitchfork Steak Fondue for Youth.  The social begins at 5:30p.m. with serving beginning at 6:00p.m.  Entertainment is singer/songwriter, Mark Mowry. Funds will be used to assist youth and 4-H programs throughout the year.

Wednesday is also bingo and movie night.

The annual free barbecue is a highlight on Thursday, August 2, 2018 that gets underway at 5:00p.m. Ahead of that popular event is a full day of showing, judging and events including the Bum Lamb Dress Up contest, a Talent Show and Fashion Review, and competitive shooting.  The tractor pull starts at 5:00p.m. and the Catch-a-Sheep Contest promises the usual thrills and spills.  Entertainment throughout late and afternoon and into the evening include the Belle Fourche Cowboy Band, Butch Samuelson and the Lyle Berry Band.

The 4-H and FFA Beef Show sets the stage for Friday, August 3, 2018 that also includes the Dress-a-Rabbit Contest.  Bidding is open on the silent auction of non-livestock entries in conjunction with the Nisland Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary Pie Sale getting underway. At 5:00p.m. is the small animal round robin showmanship, followed by the 4-H round robin at 5:30 p.m. Evening entertainment is the music of Brock Amenson. A non-alcohol dance in the pavilion gets underway at 9:00p.m. to midnight.

The annual Baby Show, Horseshoe Tournament and Youth Rodeo highlight activities on Saturday, August 4, 2018. Arena action gets underway at 9:00a.m.
