Authorities identify individual who drowned in pond

News Staff - July 10, 2019

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Authorities in Rapid City have identified the man who drowned in Memorial Park pond last week.

Authorities say he was 36-year-old Cody Clifford of Rapid City. Clifford was pulled by rescue crews from the pond after emergency personnel responded to multiple reports of a person drowning at around 3:30 a.m. on July 2.

Witnesses on the scene said a male subject went into the water “for a swim” and didn’t resurface after going under.

He was not visible to firefighters on shore and rescue divers had to perform a search before pulling him out of the water. He was unconscious and not breathing at the time. Authorities estimate he was in the water for just over 40 minutes.

He was transported to Rapid City Regional Hospital and later pronounced dead.

The Rapid City Police Department says that no foul play is suspected, and his death is believed to be accidental in nature based on witness reports.

The RCPD says alcohol is believed to have been a factor.
