Authorities identify man killed in traffic stop shootout

RAPID CITY, S.D. – We now know the name of the man who was shot and killed after a traffic stop Wednesday night in Rapid City.

Authorities identified the man as 30-year-old Anthony Angel. Angel died Thursday morning after being shot by a Rapid City police officer.

The Attorney General’s Office says the incident began when a vehicle was stopped by police around 6:30 p.m. on East Highway 44 near the intersection with Saint Patrick Street.

Authorities say Angel emerged from the car and fired shots at the officers, striking a patrol car. Officers returned fire and struck Angel. He was taken to the hospital where he later died.

At this time, it’s not clear if Angel was the driver of the vehicle. There were three men total inside the car.

The officer’s name who fired the shots has not been released.

The investigation into the shooting is being conducted by the state Division of Criminal Investigation.
