Authorities identify man killed in weekend crash near Union Center

UNION CENTER, S.D. – A Piedmont man has been identified as the person who died Saturday morning in a two-vehicle crash west of Union Center.

A 1998 Honda Civic was eastbound on South Dakota Highway 34 when it crossed the center line and into the path of a 1996 Peterbilt Tractor Trailer pulling an empty gravel trailer. The two vehicles collided.

Blake Williams, the 26-year-old driver of the Honda Civic, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seatbelt. Williams was member of the Piedmont Fire Department and a Facebook post from the department stated:

”Blake was a huge asset to our agency in so many ways being both on the structure side and on the wildland fire crews.”

Melvin Frank of Lemmon, S.D. was the 57-year-old driver of the tractor trailer. He was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.

South Dakota’s Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash.
