Gary Matthews - October 15, 2020

WHITEWOOD, S.D. - Lawrence County authorities say a search of a Whitewood area home has resulted in the confiscation of several dogs and a subsequent animal neglect investigation.

The Lawrence County Sheriff's office says they were contacted about possible animal neglect at an address north of Whitewood on Tuesday and upon arrival, officers noticed numerous dogs that appeared to be in a neglected state.

Subsequent to the initial investigation, a search warrant was requested and granted.

As a result of a search of the property, officers say several dogs were found to be dead and ultimately, 24 dogs were seized.

The Western Hills Humane Society assisted in assessing the animals and providing shelter.

Lawrence County Sheriff Brian Dean says the investigation into the matter is continuing and no further information was available as of yet.

The Western Hills Humane Society is administering to the medical needs and shelter of the dogs.

Lawrence County officials were assisted in the matter by Sturgis Police, Deadwood Police and Whitewood Police Department.
