BHSU Softball - Seniors show out in final RMAC battle

CHADRON, Neb. – The Black Hills State University softball team closed out the 2019 season with a 3-1 series victory over Chadron State. The Yellow Jackets (13-28, 10-23 RMAC) swept the Eagles (14-35, 11-28 RMAC) in Saturday's doubleheader, taking the first game 8-7 before defeating CSC, 5-4, in the second. With the series finale victory over the Eagles, the Green and Gold set a new BHSU record with 10 RMAC wins.

Senior Alex Wiley, Katelyn Odle, and Morgan Smith homered in the series victory over the Eagles, while freshman pitcher Crystal Amaral set a new career high with 12 strikeouts.

Game 1: BHSU 8, CSC 7
Wiley and Odle led off the game with back-to-back homeruns to put the Green and Gold on the board with a 2-0 lead. The Eagles immediately responded with a single by Bailey Rominger, scoring Haleigh Hoefs to tie up the game.

The Yellow Jackets advanced their lead in the second, tallying five hits to take a 4-2 lead. Morgan Smith doubled to right field to advance Samantha Schoen to third, putting runners in scoring position.Wiley singled to right field to bring home Schoen and Smith, recording two RBI.

Chadron State used back-to-back homeruns to take a 5-4 lead over BHSU in the bottom of the third. The Yellow Jackets tagged on another three runs to take back the lead, including a homerun from Maddi Fidler for her fifth of the season, before the Eagles rallied with three runs to bring the score within one.BHSU's defense held CSC in the seventh to take the conference victory, knocking the Eagles out of the running for the RMAC tournament.

Six different Yellow Jackets recorded RBI led by Wiley, going 4-for-5 at the plate with three RBI and one homerun.Odle and Kindall Bethke followed, recording three hits each.Maddie London, Caitlyn Graves, Dominique DiManna, and Schoen each recorded hits in the Yellow Jackets victory.

Wiley (4-13) recorded the win for BHSU, allowing 11 hits and seven runs (six earned) through five complete innings, while Breanne Henricksen earned her first save of the season facing seven batters in two innings.Britny Davis (0-1) earned the loss, allowing 14 hits and six runs (five earned) in 5.1 innings.

Game 2: BHSU 5, CSC 4
A pitcher's duel was carried out in the second game of the doubleheader, as neither team saw any runs cross the plate until late in the game.

After five scoreless innings, senior Morgan Smith led off the sixth inning with a solo homerun to put the first run of the game on the board.Alex Wiley immediately followed with her second homerun of the day to give the Yellow Jackets a 2-0 lead. Freshman Hailey Franklin singled to left field to score Katelyn Odle from third before Bryce Henricksen doubled to bring in two runs, advancing the Yellow Jackets lead, 5-0.

Kayla Michel knocked one out of the park to put a run on the board for Chadron State in the sixth.After holding the Yellow Jackets in the seventh, a three-run homer for the Eagles brought the game within one.With a 1-2 count, Crystal Amaral struck out the batter swinging for the Yellow Jackets to walk away with a 5-4 victory.

Bryce Henricksen led BHSU with two runs batted in, while Wiley, Franklin and Smith each tallied one.

Crystal Amaral (9-9) earned the complete game victory on the mound, allowing six hits, four runs (four earned) and striking out 12.Dallas Magnusson (2-6) took the loss for the Eagles, allowing eight hits and five runs (five earned), through 6.2 innings.Peyton Propp threw 0.1 innings, striking out one.
