BHSU Athletics; Media Release - February 2, 2019

SPEARFISH, S.D. – Four players scored in double figures, as the Black Hills State University men's basketball team took down Metropolitan State University of Denver, 64-62, on Saturday evening. The win was the first ever victory for the Yellow Jackets over the Roadrunners.

Dez Stoudamire led the Yellow Jackets (11-8, 10-5 RMAC) with 17 points, making three three-pointers. Tyler Oliver had 16 points and eight rebounds, also dishing out four assists. Fraser Malcolm tallied 13 points, while Makaleb McInnis added 10.

The Roadrunners (8-11, 6-9 RMAC) opened the game with a dunk by Kendall McIntosh, but the entire game would be a battle between the two teams. Oliver immediately responded with a three-pointer to give the Yellow Jackets their first lead of the game. Following seven lead changes, the game was tied, 20-20, with 2:36 to play in the first half. Oliver made his second trey of the game to give BHSU another lead. The Green and Gold pushed the cushion out to as many as seven points, and took a four-point lead, 27-23, into halftime.

The Yellow Jackets opened the second half on a 15-7 run to go up by 12 points, 42-30, with 12:51 to play. MSU Denver would not go away quietly, however, and slowly chipped away at the deficit. BHSU was up six with 1:42 to play, before the Roadrunners hit two consecutive three-pointers to tie up the game, 62-62, with 55 seconds left in the game. Malcolm hit one of two free throws with 30 seconds left, before taking a charge at the other end of the floor. Stoudamire hit a free throw with two seconds to play to extend the lead to two. A last second shot by McIntosh rattled off the rim, as the Yellow Jackets claimed the 64-62 win.

BHSU shot 41.7 percent from the field (20-for-48), while MSUD was 41.5 percent from the floor (22-for-53). The Yellow Jackets were 9-for-24 (37.5 percent) from beyond the arc, while the Roadrunners were 6-for-21 (28.6 percent) on three-pointers. BHSU was 15-for-20 (75.0 percent) from the charity stripe, and MSU Denver was 12-for-14 (85.7 percent) from the free throw line. The Green and Gold were outrebounded, 34-31.

Jaryn Taylor had 11 points and seven rebounds to lead the Roadrunners.

Meanwhile, The Black Hills State University women's basketball team fell to MSU Denver, 69-54, on Saturday afternoon.

BHSU (12-6, 8-6 RMAC) was led by Morgan Ham with 17 points, while Racquel Wientjes tallied 11. Katie Messler led the Yellow Jackets with six rebounds.
