Black Hills Energy Customers Reports Scam Phone Calls

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Black Hills Energy has been receiving information from numerous Black Hills Energy customers that they have received scam phone calls indicating their account is past due, and requesting they call an 800 number to make immediate payment or their service will be shut off in the next 30-60 minutes.

If you receive a call requesting immediate payment, do not call the requested number back, and do not make a payment.

“These calls are a fraudulent attempt to coerce customers into making a false payment,” says Mutch Usera, Sr. community relations manager at Black Hills Energy. “If you have any questions regarding this ongoing scam please contact Black Hills Energy customer service center directly at 888-890-5554.”

Additional tip – when receiving scam phone calls including if a customer is suspicious of someone claiming to represent a utility, contact the Black Hills Energy provider using the phone number on your monthly bill or the utility’s website; especially call to verify the identification of any utility workers arriving unannounced before letting them inside.

Finally, if you suspect fraud from a phone call or if someone is at your front door claiming to be someone they are not, you should immediately contact local law enforcement.
