Black Hills State University holds BHSU Day in Sturgis

STURGIS, S.D. – Black Hills State University held its first annual BHSU Day in Sturgis Tuesday.

BHSU Interim President Laurie Nichols, along with representatives from BHSU, made a visit to Sturgis Brown High School to discuss educational opportunities.

Nichols says the visit was beneficial for students and the school.

“We were able to meet with the principal and assistant principal and were anxious to learn moreabout Sturgis High School and their curriculum. We spent a lot of time talking about duel credit and where students are planning on going after they graduate.”

Nichols explains the concept of holding a BHSU Day.

“We wanted to meet as many people as we can and learn more about Sturgis and see if we could figure out are there points of connection between Sturgis and Sturgis opportunities and what BHSU might be able to engage with.”

Nichols says it’s important to get students in high school involved with a college education early.

“I always talk about that we are a comprehensive, regional, public university system serving western South Dakota and primarily the Black Hills region. And we really do need to make sure that we are taking very good care of our feeder schools like Sturgis. And so, spending time in these local high schools is very important.”

Nichols visited with local businesses and community leaders during the afternoon before hosting a gathering at the Loud American Roadhouse in Sturgis.
