Black Hills V.A. going tobacco free by end of the month

Gary Matthews - May 12, 2019

STURGIS, S.D. – The Black Hills V.A. says they will go tobacco free by June 1st.

In a release Monday, the Black Hills Health Care System says all of its facilities would be tobacco free for visitors, contractors, volunteers, vendors and patients by May 29.

Department of Veterans Health Administration published V.H.A. Directive 1085 Smoke-Free Policy at all V.A. Health Care facilities on March 5.

Sandra Horsman, Director of the V.A. Black Hills Health Care System, says the change in policy is consistent with their mission to promote personal wellness and provide a healthy environment for staff, patients and visitors.

The Black Hills V.A. is not alone in recognizing the importance of a tobacco-free campus. Over 4,000 health care facilities and four national health care systems in the U.S. have implemented smoke-free grounds, to include many V.H.A. health care facilities.
