Branding Party to raise funds for new Meade County Event Center

F.Ganje - October 3, 2018

STURGIS, SD – A 4-H program bursting at the seams with new members is good news.  Now, the Meade County 4-H program needs a space to fit them all in, says 4-H Program Advisor Jenny Voigt. This weekend’s Branding Party at the Knuckle Pavilion is among the fundraisers being held to reach the estimated $250,000 to $300,000 needed to build such a place.

“Our goal is to raise a total of $250,000 to $300,000,” shares Voigt. “As we approach the first benchmark of $100,000, that will allow us to begin writing grants and identify in-kind donations – both of which will lower the cost.”  She continued, “The plan now is for a  60 x 112 foot building to include a meeting room, kitchen, bathrooms, storage and an open bay area.   So it can accommodate a lot of different needs.”

There are several ways to support the Branding Party fundraiser, says Voigt. The event, set for Saturday, October 6, 2018 includes a steak tip dinner beginning at 5p.m., a silent auction and live music beginning at 7p.m. Tickets are $15 for ages 12 and older, $10 for ages 5 to 11, and ages under four have free admission.

A Silent Auction will include around 70 items. In addition to boards for sale for brands, the decorative boards – provided by Sturgis Photo & Gifts – are also suitable for individual and family names and businesses. The $250 donation includes engraving.  The completed boards will hang in the new event center.

Interest and membership in Meade County 4-H programs have increased over the past several years. Voigt attributes that to more and more families and kids learning that 4-H is about more than, ‘sows, cows, and plows.’ And she points out the facility will be available to the Sturgis community and individuals as well.

”In 2011, Meade County 4-H had about 180 members, says Voigt. “Now there are 300 4-H members and each year, it continues to grow.  With that kind of growth we really need this building.  And it will also be available to the Sturgis community, sporting and other organized programs and individuals as well.”

Tickets are available at the Meade County Extension Office at 1425 Sherman St., Ste 103, in Sturgis and will also be available at the pavilion door at The Knuckle. She reminds those planning on purchasing a $250 brand board to bring their iron and  text for engraving.  There are accommodations for both fire and electric.  Families, individuals and businesses planning on purchasing a $250 board should have the engraving text ready.

“There are so many supportive people and businesses in the community and surrounding areas,” says Voigt.  “That includes The Knuckle for the use of the Pavilion and cost-sharing the steak tip, all you can eat buffet. And Sturgis Photo & Gifts for its donation of boards and engraving. Not to mention all the great donations of items and services for the Silent Auction.”

“This week marks the start of the new 4-H year,” shares Voigt.  “Every day, people call our office for information about joining.  They are starting to realize that 4-H is not typically what they thought. There are so many opportunities to learn in a variety of subject areas.  Plus, we teach kids how to grow personally and how to focus on community service.  Those two things make for good leaders.”

She adds,  “We’re working hard to build a program I call ‘modern day 4-H.’”
