Bronc Futurity, parade, rodeo and more part of annual Newell Labor Day Rodeo

News Staff - August 30, 2019

NEWELL, SD – The annual Newell Labor Day celebration will showcase stock contractors and cowboys at the second annual Newell Bronc Futurity. With added money for both stock contractors and cowboys, and in a newly lit arena, event chairman Matt Mangis is excited about offering both contestants and spectators a high-energy event, Fri., August 30th.

Unlike a regular bronc match where contractors are paid each time a horse is bucked, a futurity ramps up the pressure for contractors who pay to buck their horses.  At the Newell event, contractors will bring two horses each.  Added money of $5,000 sweetens the pot for both contractors and riders.

The event is sanctioned by the World Futurity Association (WFA).  At the Newell futurity, horses will earn points each time they buck.  Those points go towards year-end tallies with the hopes of qualifying for the World Futurity Bronc Match in Las Vegas, NV during the National Finals Rodeo in December. The  Newell Labor Day Celebration also includes a Colt Futurity ahead of the Bronc Futurity.  Added money of $1,000 will see some of the best up and coming two and three year olds in the arena and a chance to see a future world champion.

Arena action continues on Saturday, August 31 with a Ranch Rodeo. A Calcutta at 12 noon is followed by the performance at 1:00pm. Teams consist  of five people that include one woman, one under the age of 14, one over 50, one mutton buster under 60 pounds and one other team member.

The day also includes a 5K Fun Run/Walk&Bike event, a Quilt Show, Rodeo Queen competition,  Fireman's BBQ, and the Newell Bar Street Dance.

The Corey Price Memorial Roping is part of Sunday’s events as is a car show, mud volleyball, a tractor pull and a youth street dance.

A decades old tradition of rodeo over the Labor Day weekend in Newell continues on Monday, September 2.
