COVID-19 Sunday Update – Seven new cases reported, six in Beadle County, one in Brown County

PIERRE, S.D. – Beadle County has become South Dakota’s first on the verge of community spread of the new Coronavirus, or COVID-19.

In her daily briefing Sunday, Governor Kristi Noem says Beadle County has recorded 6 new cases of COVID-19, bringing their total to 10.

Noem says the cases are in a male, age 60-69, a female, age 50-59, a female 20-29, a male age 20-29, a female age 10-19, and a male age 10-19.

With the number of cases in Beadle County, the Governor says they qualify for community spread of the disease and is asking everyone in that county to do everything they can to keep the virus from spreading and keep it isolated. She says most of the new cases involve residents who were around others who had the virus. Noem says none of the new cases are hospitalized and are resting at home.

There was also an additional positive case in Brown County – the county’s first case. That case is travel related. The case is a male in his 60’s.

With the seven new positives, South Dakota now has 21 cases. Other than Beadle County, Noem says they are still reporting no community spread in the rest of the state.

Health Department Secretary Kim Malsom-Rysdon says of the 21 cases, 6 have fully recovered and at this time, none of the those testing positive is in the hospital.

As for testing, Noem says they are getting more supplies and plan to run more tests today. There have been 740 negative tests and 277 are pending.

She says they have been successful so far in slowing this virus down, but she does anticipate more cases as we move forward.
