COVID-19 related deaths surpass 304 Thursday as 13 new deaths reported

STURGIS, S.D. – Active cases surpassed 7,000 Thursday and 13 more people died as COVID-19 continued its surge across South Dakota.

In their daily update, state health officials reported 797 new cases, adding 528 to the active caseload, which rose to 7,132 today.

There were also 13 deaths being blamed on COVID-19, sending the statewide total since the pandemic began to 304.

The number of people hospitalized due to COVID-19 rose by one today, also to 304.

For the second day in a row, every county west of the river had at least one new case. Six counties reported new cases in the double digits, including Pennington, Meade and Lawrence counties.

Pennington County recorded the highest amount as 86 new COVID-19 cases were reported. That sends the cumulative total to 3,378. There are 733 case remaining active.

Meade and Lawrence County each reported 15 new cases. The total in Meade hits 752 with 138 active and the Lawrence County total is 611 with 134 active.

Other counties with double-digit new cases are Oglala Lakota with 32, Todd with 23 and Dewey with 22.

Other new cases across West River today include 8 in Custer, 6 each in Fall River and Harding, 5 each in Butte, Bennett and Jackson, 4 each in Perkins, Corson and Gregory, 3 each in Ziebach and Tripp, 2 each in Stanley, Haakon and Mellette and one each in Lyman and Jones counties.
