Champions crowned as South Dakota Track and Field wraps up

RAPID CITY, S.D. - The 2018 South Dakota High School Track and Field season came to a close Saturday, as the state meet wrapped up in Rapid City.

In Class AA, Sioux Falls Lincoln captured the boys team title with Rapid City Central coming in second. Sturgis placed ninth.

In the girls, Brandon Valley won the team title with Lincoln in second. Stevens was fourth and Central fifth. Sturgis finished tied for 14th.

West River champions in girls included Elizabeth Schaefer of Stevens in the 100 meter and 300-meter hurdles and Hannah Young from Central in the 200 meter dash. Young almost  captured the 100 as well, falling just short of Erin Kinney of Harrisburg.

On the boys side, the Scoopers won the 1,600 spring medley with the team of Austin Permann, Jared Sailer, Trevor Christman and Ethan Brenneman.

The Rapid City Central and Rapid City Stevens teams came in second and third behind Lincoln in both the 4 x 100 and 4 x 200 relays.

At the Class A Meet, St Thomas More cruised to the girls team title with Belle Fourche finishing in second.

In the boys, St Thomas More also won first with Sioux Falls Christian in second.

The Cavalier girls 4 x 100 meter relay team won first place, but it was the St Thomas More boys capturing a number of titles.

Thomas Rafferty won the 100 meter dash, Ty Trainor won the 400 meter dash and Jacob Hyde won the 200 meter dash.

As a team, the Cavaliers won the 4 x 200, 4 x 100, and captured second in the 4 x 400.

Shayla Howell of Belle Fourche capped off a great career with wins in the 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash and long jump.

Hill City captured a team win in the 1,600 sprint medley.

At the Class B meet, Freeman won the boys title with Gregory and Wall in third and fourth respectively.

Deubrook captured the girls team title with Ipswich in second and Newell in third.

Delany Leber of Newell won first in the girls 1,600 meter run and Daniel Burkhalter of Bison won the boys 1,600.

Andrew Law of Wall won the boys 300-meter hurdles and the Wall team won the boys 1,600 sprint medley.
