Citizen of the Year recognized at Faith Stock Show

F.Ganje - August 4, 2018

FAITH, SD – A ‘go-to’ kind of guy. That’s how Patty Hauser with  Faith Community Commerce and Development characterizes Jon Collins, this year’s Faith Citizen of the Year.

“Everybody calls Jon to help them,” says Patty.  “He’s just a good person and someone who helps our community in so many ways.”

As part of three generations born and raised in Faith, Jon and wife Katrina are parents to the fourth generation, 10 year old Jay and seven year old twins Katelyn and Jordan. It’s that sense of family that Jon says he likes about living in Faith.

“The best part is the closeness everyone has for each other. It’s like a big family, shares Jon.   “I’ve always been there so it’s like the whole town is my family.”

As the city foreman, Jon says stock show time means his department is busier than usual – including a helping hand from recently retired foreman Don Dupper who spent 47 years in the position.

We keep everything up and running for the festivities,” says Jon. “If anything goes wrong, we’re there to get the power back on or whatever might be needed. We’re really busy during the stock show.”

For any small community, volunteers are important, says Jon.

“I’m part of the Horizons program which is a group of people who get together and work on community development. Right now, we’re brainstorming ideas to fund more of the upkeep for the community pool.”  He adds,  “If we didn’t have volunteers, there would be a lot of things that wouldn’t get done. Volunteers are so important.”

He has his favorites in terms of community projects where he and his family’s love of the outdoors shows in the care given to outdoor landscapes in and around the community.

“I really enjoy working on Faith Lake and Campground,” he says.  “When people come and see an area that’s nice  and clean with good facilities, they remember that.”

The city’s community commerce organization looks for people who go the extra mile, says Patty. For Jon’s part, he is appreciative of the city’s recognition.

“Jon is someone who is willing to go above and beyond to help the community in any way.  He will go totally out of his way to help anyone do anything,” shares Patty.

Jon adds, “I’m very humbled by the opportunity. I never would have thought I could be honored like that so it’s really humbling.”
