- April 15, 2019

Clayton Lester Kelly, the son of Lloyd L. and Delorse A. (Michael) Kelly, was born in Hawarden, IA, on August 10, 1960.  He lived his younger years in the Yankton and Letcher areas of South Dakota before making his home in Rapid City.  On May 10, 1996, he married Nancy Hunt in Rapid City.

Clayton was a master carpenter and operated his own business, “Clayton’s Handyman and Remodeling Service,” for 5 years.  He was then employed by Knecht’s Home Center before being diagnosed in 2014 with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.  He fought this horrific disease like a true warrior, rarely complaining.

Clayton was one of a kind, never met a stranger, and was always willing to help anyone in need.  His garage was his palace, and he could be found there building something or sharing a Corona with friends.  He will be remembered for his witty, over the top stories and jokes.  As his brother said, “his entire life was a story,” and he will be missed by everyone who knew and loved him.

Clayton, 58, passed peacefully on Friday, April 12, 2019, at his home in Rapid City surrounded by his family.

Blessed to have been a part of his life are his wife, Nancy; sons, Sean Kelly, Jeremiah (Jenna) Weaver, Jason Blakeman, and Jeremy Snyder; daughter, Amanda (Travis “TJ”) Farrar; his grandchildren whom he cherished, Dylan Farrar, Blake Farrar, Avery Farrar, Melody Weaver, Caleb Weaver, and Isaac Weaver; brothers, Joe Kelly and Marlin (Vidette) Kelly; mother-in-law, Anna Dick; sister-in-law, Dottie Adams; nieces, Tanya (Kyle) Nelsen, Alysia Kelly, Tonielle Kelly, Angie (Steve) Jacobs, Jenae Kelly, and Chanel Kelly; and numerous cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Delorse; his father-in-law, Martin Dick; and a nephew, James Adams.

Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, April 18, 2019, at Grace United Methodist Church in Piedmont with Rev. Kori Lehrkamp officiating.

A memorial has been established.
