Darrell D. Hogan

Darrell D. Hogan

- September 28, 2018

Darrell D. Hogan was the first born of Ross W. and Wanda D. (Symonds) Hogan of rural Newell, SD, on November 23, 1948, in Sturgis, SD.  He attended Newell Elementary School, Trail Creek School, and graduated from Newell High School in 1967.  While in high school, he excelled in football and track.  He even held a record in track for many years.  He was also a member of the FFA Club and was chosen to attend the National FFA Convention in Kansas City, MO.  He later spoke about the convention to his fellow club members and families at the Newell FFA Banquet.  He enjoyed rodeos and also participated in Bronc Riding and Bull Riding in his younger years.

Darrell entered the US Army on April 10, 1968.  He proudly served his country during active wartime in Vietnam where he served for 11 months and 3 days.  He received the silver star and other commendations and medals for his exemplary service during the war.  His time in the service left an indelible imprint on his life.  Friendships and memories that were forged during that time meant a great deal to him.  He was honorably discharged on March 26, 1970.

Darrell returned to Newell for a short time to work before moving to Tucson, AZ.  He had gained a strong work ethic at a young age, even working during school vacations, and he found his niche as the manager of the VFW Club in Tucson.  He enjoyed that position and made many friends in fellow co-workers and patrons.

Darrell was exceptionally talented.  He had a knack for drawing and woodworking.  Family members considered themselves lucky to have been recipients of his woodworking projects.  He also loved the Black Hills and the wildlife and used them as many of the subjects in his drawings.  He was also very generous and donated to many charities including Easter Seals and Boys and Girls Club.  He was a member of the Moose Lodge and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Club in Tucson.

Darrel, 69, died Friday, August 3, 2018, in Tucson.

Darrell is survived by his daughter, Harmony (Tony) Savoia; two grandsons, Preston Wittmer and Kai Horton.  He is also survived by his mother, Wanda Hogan; siblings, Beverly Bruse, Mike Hogan, Patty (Gary) Sattler, Connie (Gary) Donahey, and Doug (Sheryl) Hogan; as well as many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ross, in 1999; and brother-in-law, Jerry Bruse, in 2015.

A memorial service will be held at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis, SD, on October 5, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. with military honors and interment at Black Hills National Cemetery immediately following.

A memorial has been established to the VFW in Newell.
