Deadline nears to apply for Rypkema Memorial Colt Award

RAPID CITY, SD – Applications are open through January 25, 2020 for a chance to win a registered Quarter Horse colt from a reputation horse breeding family.

The 9th Annual Rypkema Memorial Colt Award (made possible by the Lloyd Rypkema family of Rapid City, SD, and the Jim and Joni Hunt family of Faith, SD) is presented to the entry that best personifies the western and ranching spirit.

This year’s colt to be awarded is a 2020 Palomino stud colt, was sired by Driftin Pep San//dam is Sapphire Flit-the granddaughter of Lloyd’s famous Palomino Devil Cat Dancer. 

Youth ages 12-18 from South Dakota, North Dakota, Wyoming, Montana and Nebraska are eligible to enter.

Rypkema, who died in 2010, was a Pennington County commissioner and member of the Rapid City School Board in addition to being a rancher and supporter of the Black Hills Stock Show & Rodeo and the Central States Fair

Since his passing,  the family of the late local rancher and public statesman have worked to keep his legacy alive by holding an essay contest to award a boy or a girl from the five state area a colt from the Rypkema herd to own and care for.

The winner will be presented the colt during the annual Black Hills Stock Horse Sale, Sat. February 1, 2020 held in the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.
