Delay in data execution inflates Wednesday's COVID-19 numbers

STURGIS, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Health reported 149 new cases of COVID-19 today, but the increase was expected due to a delay affecting Tuesday’s numbers.

The Department stated that today’s update includes cases reported to the Department between Monday, July 27 at 1 p.m. and Tuesday, July 28 at 7 p.m. due to a delay in the daily data extraction.

Along with the high number of new cases were six new deaths, raising the state’s total to 129.

All six new deaths were men. Three were listed 80+ age range, two were 60-69 age range and one 50-59 age range. One was listed in Minnehaha County, one in Lincoln County, one in Lyman County, one in Roberts County, one in Union County and one in Brown County.

Numbers around the Black Hills area remained relatively stable. Pennington County reported 9 new cases, sending their cumulative total to 796 and the active number of cases is down 15 today to 107.

Meade County reported an additional case as did Custer County. The active caseload in Meade is up one to 10 and Custer has 2 active cases.

Butte County recorded two new cases, giving them 10 total with 2 currently active and Oglala Lakota reported three new cases, sending their cumulative total to 139 with 21 active.

In addition, the South Dakota Department of Health is reporting additional cases of COVID-19 among campers and staff who attended Camp Judson in Keystone. According to the most recent data available, 32 campers and staff have tested positive for COVID-19. All of the cases identified are South Dakota residents.  The Department continues to investigate positive cases as they are identified and notify close contacts.

Other new cases around western South Dakota include two each in Corson and Perkins counties and one each in Dewey, Lyman and Ziebach.

The statewide active number of cases is up eight today to 903. The number of people hospitalized is 46, down three from Tuesday.
