Department of Health reports 163 new COVID-19 cases; gives update on state’s schools

STURGIS, S.D. – Monday’s COVID-19 report from the state Department of Health indicated 163 new cases with no new deaths.

Around the Black Hills area, Pennington County added 19 new cases Monday, sending the cumulative total to 1,814. Of those, 326 remain active. Active cases are up 6 today in Pennington County.

Meade County had 8 new cases to report, sending the total in the county to 392. There are 84 active cases, up 5 from Sunday.

Lawrence County reported 4 new cases, giving them a total of 290 with 60 active cases. Active cases are down 2 today in Lawrence.

Other new case numbers today include 2 in Oglala Lakota County and one in Custer County.

The statewide active number of cases was up 38 Monday to 2,499.

The number of hospitalizations remained at 110.

A total of 1,183 new persons tested were reported on Monday.

Meanwhile, the weekly report of COVID-19 cases with South Dakota K-12 schools and colleges, universities and technical colleges highlights the number of recoveries since the start of school.

On Monday, the South Dakota Department of Health released new numbers for COVID-19 in schools for the week September 6-12. There are a total of 667 total positive coronavirus cases within K-12 schools across the state and 1,053 total cases within higher education.

In K-12 schools, 13 schools are reporting more than three active cases, while 116 schools have 1-2 or active cases and 758 schools do not have an active cases. Students make up 446 of the K-12 cases, staff account for 221 and a total of 453 are now listed as recovered.

In higher education, 12 colleges or universities has more than three active cases, while two have 1-2 active cases and one doesn’t have a single active COVID-19 case. There have been 1,004 students who have tested positive, 49 staff and 860 are now considered recovered.

Locally, Black Hills State University has 9 active cases; 7 students and 2 faculty. There are 20 currently in quarantine or isolation.

At the School of Mines, there are 19 active cases; 18 students and 1 faculty/staff. Currently there are 103 in quarantine or isolation.
