Digital photograph, scanning services available during History Day

F.Ganje - June 4, 2019

STURGIS, SD – Dust off those old photo albums.  Relocate that file of family documents you know is around somewhere…or even a treasured object   This is your opportunity to have them digitally photographed and/or scanned by professionals with the South Dakota State Library, shares Lee Stroschine, Adult Outreach and Programming Librarian at the Sturgis Public Library.

“Scan Day is being hosted by the library,” says Stroschine.  “ There will be staff from the South Dakota State Library who will be scanning items such as  historical family records, photographs or objects that people want to preserve digitally.”

The library’s Scan Day will be held Friday, June 14, 2019  from 9:00am to 4:00 pm at the Sturgis Auditorium located on Main Street.  Stroschine hopes people will want to engage in building local and state history by bringing in records, photographs, and objects.

“Knowing the amount of history that is in the area, I wouldn’t be surprised by anything that people might bring in,” observes Stroschine. Someone will think,  ‘Oh yeah, I got this thing from Grandma that I can bring in for scanning.’  It could be something like old mining certificates or photographs of the area  that no one has seen.”

The state library will provide flash drives to participants.  Stroschine encourages people who want to use the service to contact the Sturgis Library now to schedule one of the 30 minute appointments that are available between 9:00am and 4:00pm.

“When the state library notified us that the service was available, we thought doing it in conjunction with the Sturgis & Meade County Historical Society History Day would be a perfect opportunity for people to get their history preserved,” observed Stroschine.

Scan Day – free to the public - is being held at the same time as the 5th Annual History Day presented by the Sturgis and Meade County Historical Society, June 14-15, 2019 in Sturgis, SD.

“The most important thing to remember about Scan Day” says Stroschine, “is that you need to sign up for a half hour time slot.  Contact the library to make your reservation.”
