Fire crews in southeast Montana battle large wildfire Monday afternoon

Gary Matthews - October 13, 2020

EKALAKA. Mont. – Fire crews in southeast Montana battled a wind-driven wildfire Monday afternoon.

The fire was reported approximately 16 miles south of Ekalaka.

Dubbed the Wolff Fire, it ended up crossing Highway 323 north of Boxelder Creek in several locations.

Due to gusty wind, the fire remained active into Monday night before fire crews were able to get a line around it.

Custer County Emergency Management reported as of 8:00 p.m. Monday night, the fire was contained. A passing rain shower and decreased winds helped crews get a handle on the fire.

Several units from southeastern Montana responded to the blaze including Camp Crook, Alzada, Baker, Ekalaka and Carter Country Rural Fire. Many ranchers and landowners also helped in fighting the blaze.

The cause of the fire was not known as of last night.
