Former Sturgis area legislator, George Blair, passes away

STURGIS, S.D. – Longtime Sturgis area rancher and former legislator George Blair has passed away.

Blair passed away on New Year’s Day.

Blair served four terms in Pierre in the House of Representatives.

A war veteran, Blair flew 47 missions as the pilot of a B-25 in the Pacific Theater during the second World War.  On his final mission, his plane was shot down and he had to ditch in the South China Sea.  He and his crew were rescued by a U.S. submarine.

Governor Kristi Noem has ordered flags at the South Dakota State Capitol to be flown at half-staff from 8 a.m. until sunset on Monday, January 6, 2020, to honor the life of Blair.

Blair served in the South Dakota Legislature from 1979 until 1986.

A memorial service for Blair will be held at 1 p.m. on January 6 at First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis.
