Frances Elizabeth Wetz

- November 4, 2019

Frances Elizabeth (Bachand) Wetz was born March 20, 1921, in a nursing home known as Miss Hayes in Sturgis, SD, to Frank E. & Mary V. (Kincheloe) Bachand.  The family lived near the Belle Fourche River southeast of Volunteer where she and her younger brother, Oscar, herded sheep and cattle in the Dirty 30’s.  She attended country school through the seventh grade and eighth through twelfth grades in the Sturgis schools.

She was married to Oliver M. Wetz October 12, 1940, and they lived for two years in a one-room apartment in the same house where she was born.  They moved to a ranch in the Vale area to raise cattle and sheep and their son, Ronnie, was born in 1947.  They retired in 1984 and moved back to Sturgis.  She lived at Heritage Acres from 2010-2013 and then the nursing home until her death.

She was a long-time member of the Volunteer Extension Club, a member of the Sturgis Senior Center, the R.S.V.P. Hospital Auxiliary, and the Western Dakota Antique Auxiliary.

Frances enjoyed her family, especially the great-grandchildren, gardening, yardwork, growing flowers, house plants, and a variety of crafts, which included crocheting dozens of doilies and even tablecloths.  She played the piano by ear and composed songs for her two granddaughters when they were born.  She took up oil painting rather late in life and painted some beautiful pictures.

Frances, 98, of Sturgis, died Sunday, November 3, 2019, at Sturgis Regional Senior Care.

Survivors include her son, Ronnie and Peggy Wetz, Red Owl; two granddaughters, Jodie and Jason Grubl, Red Owl, and Jan and Will Brengle, Piedmont; five great-grandchildren, Tye Grubl, Williston, ND, Brittany and Jalynn Grubl, Red Owl, and Tanner and Bailey Brengle, Sioux Falls; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Oliver, in 1989; and three brothers, Ezward, Ralph, and Oscar.

Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.

Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 6, 2019, at First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis with Rev. Paul Henschen and Pastor Harold Delbridge officiating.  Inurnment will follow at Bear Butte Cemetery in Sturgis.
