Friday COVID-19 update - three new deaths and new high for active cases

STURGIS, S.D. – State health officials reported 793 new cases of COVID-19 in their Friday report. Of those, 720 are confirmed and 73 are considered probable.

The new cases send the active caseload to another new high of 7,312.

Three new deaths were reported today, sending the state’s death total to 307. The three new deaths were all individuals 80 and older, two women and a man. The deaths are in the counties of Douglas, Minnehaha and Edmunds.

The number of people hospitalized due to the virus dropped slightly today to 299.

As for new cases around the Black Hills area, Pennington County reported 90, sending the cumulative total to 3,468. Of those, 788 remain active.

Meade County reported 21 new cases, sending the total to 773 with 156 active cases.

Lawrence County had 19 new cases and the cumulative total rose to 630 with 148 active.

Butte County saw their highest daily number of new cases since the pandemic began as 26 new cases were reported. Butte County now has a cumulative total of 210 with 80 active.

Other new cases across West River include 30 in Oglala Lakota, 10 in Custer, 5 each in Dewey and Todd, 4 in Fall River, 3 each in Corson and Jackson, 2 each in Harding, Ziebach, Haakon, Stanley, Lyman, Tripp and Bennett and one each in Perkins, Gregory and Mellette counties.
