Deadwood Gaming Numbers

Gaming numbers in Deadwood down, but up nationally

News Staff - August 23, 2018

DEADWOOD, S.D. - While Deadwood gaming numbers are down through June of this year compared to last, the American Gaming Association shows a national increase of more than 3 percent since 2016.

Deadwood gaming numbers are down just over 1 percent, nationally gaming numbers hit a milestone.

Deadwood Gaming Association executive director, Mike Rodman, says "Across the country gaming revenues hit $40 billion for the first time ever. That's up 3.4 percent nationally and that's really what Deadwood is hoping we can get to that national level."

The slot machine handle decreased by more than 1 percent, meanwhile the table game handle saw an 8 percent increase. But slots is where the money is.

The gross revenue is more than $8.2 million through June this year.

"We have a little bit of a decrease this year. We had the first of July, 250 gaming devices getting re-licensed. We had the recent closing of the Celebrity Hotel,” explains Rodman. “We think that as we see some of these expansions like here at Cadillac Jack's we'll continue to see some increases in gaming revenue as we move forward."

Rodman says he's begun to notice a trend happening on Main Street. Some of the gaming is leaving the downtown area and retailers are coming into those locations.

Rodman adds, when HBO aired Deadwood the show, they saw gaming numbers increase and they're hoping with HBO revamping a movie about the town, that they will see another uptick in gaming numbers.
