Guy L Balo

- June 30, 2020

Guy L Balo, 88, of Whitewood Valley, departed this life to be with his Lord and Savior on June 27, 2020.

Guy “Grandpa” was the 13th child born to Oscar and Selma (Raatikka) Balo on March 25, 1932, at home near Spearfish, SD.  He attended the training school in Spearfish and Big Bottom country school through the 8th grade.

He spent his youth ranching and farming around Spearfish and on the prairie north of Newell tending summer herds and breaking horses to work and ride with different siblings.  He broke remount horses for the cavalry which went to Fort Robinson in Nebraska.  Guy also trained camels for the Passion Play in Spearfish.

He moved with his family to the ranch in Whitewood Valley in 1944, where he spent the rest of his life.  Guy met the love of his life when he was 10 years old, although at the time, his job was to watch a certain little girl who was 5 while their dads were talking horses.  She screamed and stomped the whole time and he hoped he would never see her again.  Things changed 13 years later as he was united in marriage to Ilene Carlson on June 11, 1955.  To this union, 5 children were born.  Guy and Ilene raised their children and led by example to serve others, do honest work, love the Lord, and love others.

Early in his marriage, Guy drove truck and also later worked in the U & I sugar beet factory in Belle Fourche on the repair gang during harvest for a few years in addition to working on the ranch.  He moved to the home place after his dad’s passing and started a dairy.

He had a passion for mechanics, welding, and a willingness to drop his work and go help any neighbor or someone in need.  God gave him the gift to see how to fix or adapt a machine if needed.  He could create or fix anything with next to nothing like so many from his generation had to do.  Throughout his life, Guy moved numerous houses, sheds, and buildings for himself and others.

Guy was a humble servant.  He served to help others rather than to seek recognition.  Guy served on the Oakdale School board.  He was also a member of the Black Hills Milk Producers for many years.  He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and served on the council several years.

Guy loved to visit, tell stories, and jokes.  He especially liked visiting with people who could speak Finn, and he always had time for a cup of coffee.

Grandpa is survived by 3 daughters, Kathy (Jube) Kester, New Raymer, CO, Kyla (Gene) Thompson, Whitewood Valley, SD, and Sherri (Barry) Knippling, Chamberlain, SD; daughter-in-law, Mona, Whitewood Valley; 13 grandchildren, Danny (April) Elwood, Kelly (Tim) Harris, Anna (Mike) Loomis, Albert Kester, Trampus (Lindsey) Thompson, Katy Thompson, Rocky (Jennifer) Thompson, Guy (Dawn) Balo, Etta (Mike) Knuth, Whitney (Allen Auer) Knippling, Trevor (Shantel Gregg) Knippling, Vanzi (Dana Douville) Knippling, and Kazney Knippling; 23 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Dorothy Balo; brother-in-law, John Koelbl; and countless nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ilene; brothers, Kenneth, Elder, Richard, Eric, and infant brother, David; sisters, Lillian, Edna, Laila, Hilma, Annie, Hazel, Etta, and Wilma; infant daughter, Sharon; son, Lonny; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, July 9, 2020, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Whitewood with Pastor David Baer officiating.  Committal services will follow at Whitewood Cemetery.
