Harold Richard “Dick” Lauer, 76, of Spearfish passed away on Friday, May 24, 2019, at Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City, SD.

Harold Richard Lauer was born during World War II on October 1, 1942 at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, a son of Harold Layton and Dorothy Evelyn (Meyer) Lauer. While attending Sturgis school, Dick met Mary Leuthold, who became his high school sweetheart. The two were married on January 19, 1962. To this union are two children, a son, Richard Dale and a daughter, Rabecca RaeLynn.

Dick completed over 22 years in the United States Army National Guard. He made a career working for the Veterans Administration, in Sturgis, SD, Ohio and Colorado, transferring to the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Alaska working as an Environmental Services Officer.

Dick was a man of many talents and his many roles in life included: Son, Student, Pin setter, Paper boy, Farm worker, Cowboy, Projectionist, Gas station attendant, School safety patrolman, Lieutenant school safety patrolman, Mechanic, Hunter, Heavy equipment mechanic and operator, Husband, Food service worker, Laundry worker, Extractor man/tumbler man, Washman, Laundry foreman, Father, Assistant laundry superintendent, Cub Scout Master, Laundry plant manager, Assistant chief of building management, Acting chief of building management, Police reserve chief, Sheriff’s posse member, Private pilot, National Guard Coxswain, Civil Air Patrol deputy commander of the Cadet program, Drivers education instructor, Drug tester, Private investigator, Hospital maintenance worker, Home renovator, Handyman, Fabricator, Tricycle modifier, Foster father to sixty-nine children, Grandpa, Adoptive parent and Church trustee and board member.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Mary, of Spearfish, SD; his son, Richard Dale (Aprilleigh) Lauer, of Wareham, MA; his daughter, Rabecca RaeLynn Lauer, of Belle Fourche, SD; three grandchildren, Galen David Lauer, Wareham, MA, Oakley Syrus Roberts and Emmitt Paul Wheeler, both of Belle Fourche, SD and his brother, Richard Lee Lauer, of Gillette, WY.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, May 30, 2019, at Calvary Temple Assembly of God Church in Spearfish, SD. Interment will follow in Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD.
