Health Department reports 80 new COVID-19 cases Friday

PIERRE, S.D. – There were 80 new cases of COVID-19 reported in the Friday update from the state Department of Health.

Of those, Pennington County had 7 new cases and Custer County added 5 new cases. It’s not known if the case spike in Custer County was due to the cases associated with the Camp Judson outbreak.

Pennington County now has a cumulative total of 811 with 112 active cases. Custer County now has a total of 18 with 6 active cases.

Elsewhere around the Black Hills area, Meade County reported two new cases today, sending the cumulative total to 71 and the number of active cases grew by one to 11.

Elsewhere around western South Dakota, Oglala Lakota added one new case as did Jones County. Oglala Lakota has 141 total with 17 active. Jones County has 2 cumulative with one active.

The statewide active number of cases is up 7 Friday to 873. The number of hospitalizations is down significantly – from 44 Thursday to 31 today.

There was also one new death reported today. The death was a female in the 80-plus age range out of Pennington County. The new death raises the county’s death toll to 27 and the statewide death toll is now 130.
