Heat lamp being blamed for Fort Pierre area barn fire

Zach Nelson-KCCR Radio, Pierre - July 9, 2019

PIERRE, S.D. - A Fort Pierre barn is a complete loss after fire raged through the structure Monday afternoon.  Fort Pierre Assistant Fire Chief Ty Odden says firefighters could only work to save surrounding buildings near the barn when they arrived.

"We started water suppression right away and performed what's called a surround and drown and quickly got the fire knocked down."

Odden says the heat and humidity caused some firefighters to seek aid on scene and most livestock outside the barn were not injured.

He says the cause of the fire appears to be a heat lamp being using to warm baby chicks.

Assisting on scene were units from the Pierre Rural Fire Department and Pierre Rescue along with A-M-R Ambulance and the Stanley County Sheriff’s Office.
