Jules Edwin Butler, known to many as “Jay” or “Biz,” 91, Spearfish, died Wednesday, August 28, 2019, at the Department of Veterans Affairs, Fort Meade.

     Jules was born August 7, 1928, in Mount Clemons, MI, to Ferrell and Marjorie (Anderson) Butler.  At 15 years of age, Jules entered the Merchant Marines.  After he was released from duty, he returned to Minnesota where he completed his education.  He then enlisted in the US Marine Corps where he served at the Battle of Chosin Reservoir and was honorably discharged in 1951.

     He married Roxanne McGuire.  Two children were born to this union, Brenda and Scott.  The family lived in many cities as they moved with the jobs that Jules held.  His life was devoted to public service where he worked as a policeman and as a full-time fireman until his retirement.  Roxanne passed away in 1994.

     Jules later married Bobbie Armstrong.  They lived in Minnesota and Texas for two decades and in 2015, they moved to Spearfish, SD.

     He is survived by his wife, Bobbie, Spearfish; daughter, Brenda (John Q) Lindstrom, Whitewood, SD; son, Scott (Char) Butler, North Richland Hills, TX; step-daughter, Teri Starnes, Minneapolis, MN; three granddaughters, Vanessa (Tom) Bridges, Spearfish, Lindsey (Travis) Jones, Keller, TX, and Channing Butler, Dallas, TX; two step-grandchildren, Leona and Cameron; two great-grandchildren, Weston and Layton; two step-great-grandchildren, Seth and Chase; and one brother, Tony Morris.

     He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Roxanne; and two sisters, Billie Serene and Sharon Morris.

     Committal services, with military honors, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 9, 2019, at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis with Chaplain Randy Bradley officiating.  Family and friends may gather at Kinkade Funeral Chapel prior to leaving for the cemetery at 10:40 a.m. in procession led by the American Legion Riders.

     A memorial has been established to the Fort Meade VA Hospice Unit.
