KBHB Bucking Horse Sale at stock show a tradition

News Staff - January 22, 2020

Rapid City, SD – Good bucking stock doesn’t just happen.  They’re bred that way.  And it’s business.  That’s the basis behind the annual bucking horse sale that’s marking its 34th year at the Stock Show this year.  The breeding runs deep in these young and coming rodeo stock.

See it all at the annual KBHB Bucking Horse Sale, Wednesday, February 5th at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center in Rapid City.

There was a time when bucking stock sales saw other rodeo contractors on the seats and that was about it. Not any more.  Sutton Rodeo’s are among the frontrunners of the burgeoning bucking horse futurity phenomenon.  Horses bring hundreds of thousands of dollars at futurities for breeders and contractors in search of the best lineage they can find.

And it’s at an event like the Annual KBHB Bucking Horse Sale where futurity enthusiasts come to shop for that next great prospect.

The sale is set for Wednesday, Feb. 5 at 1:00pm in the Barnett Arena at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.  It features approximately 40 head of Sutton Rodeo ranch raised bucking horses including the coming five-year old colt crop raised by Sutton Rodeos.   The mares of these colts have produced top quality bucking stock.

Steve Sutton points to the lucrative bucking horse futurity market, noting,  “These colts are the right age.  The futurities in Faith, SD and Las Vegas, NV have both had colts in the top final five that were purchased at this sale.”

Bucking Stock will be at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center Tuesday afternoon, for viewing prior to the sale.  According to Steve Sutton, this is one of the premier sales in the nation and has continued to get better every year.  “This offering looks to be one of the best ones yet,” he noted.    In what is a hot bucking horse futurity market, expect bidding to be quick and competitive.

Bareback and Saddle Bronc contestants enter before the sale.  Animals will be bucked on the day of the sale.  “This is a great opportunity to view new and upcoming bucking stock,” says Sutton.
