Kenneth G. Mailloux

Kenneth G. Mailloux

Kenneth G. Mailloux

- January 28, 2019

Kenneth was born February 4, 1927, in Grandma Mailloux’s house in Rapid City, SD.  He was one of seven children of Napoleon and Bernice Mailloux, along with six other siblings, Dale, Jack, Lynn, Duane, Betty, and Shirley.  This young family experienced all the events that took place during the ‘30s.  Times were tough for everyone in those days; hand-me-downs were normal, but new to the recipient.  Dad and his brothers were musically talented and played at barn dances, and Dad played at least 4 different instruments.  After graduating from high school, he joined the US Army, and was sent overseas to take part in WWII.

After being honorably discharged from the Army, he married Mamie Schuelke of Mud Butte, SD.  They were married in Sturgis, SD, on August 11, 1947.  The young couple spent a lot of time playing cards with Norman and Margaret Vansickel and Bobby and Earleen Price.  Mamie’s family was very close, and there were a lot of them, so something was always going on.

Early in this relationship, Kenny worked for Oscar Vansickel and lived over at Norman’s.  Kenny held several jobs over the years, cutting timber with one of his brothers and spending four years at the Experiment Farm at Newell.  He was a jack of all trades, including electrical, plumbing, and building.  Eventually, he went to work at the Fort Meade VA Medical Center, where he started in the laundry before going to the Fire Department, where he retired in 1977 at the age of 50.

Kenny and Mamie had three children, all boys; Dennis, Stephen, and Douglas.  Raising three boys was, at times, both challenging and difficult.  The boys could always find something to do; however, some of those didn’t always go as planned or caused the folks a little grief.  The folks were firm, but fair and very able providers.  The folks moved out to the family farm near Vale in 1963.  New friends, new school, and some hard work was just what was needed to raise three boys.

Kenneth G. Mailloux, 91, of Vale, died Saturday, January 26, 2019, in Sturgis.

Survivors include sons, Dennis (Sue) Mailloux, Como, CO, Stephen Mailloux, Vale, SD, and Douglas (Jean) Mailloux, Vale, SD; grandchildren, Roxanne, TJ, Jacque, Sarah, Jennifer, Shane, Toby, and Deana; and great-grandchildren, Brett, Addy, Ella, Zane, Noah, Aden, Sidney, Aryanna, Kianne, Miya, and Lane.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Napoleon and Bernice Mailloux; his wife, Mamie; a daughter-in-law, Karen; four brothers; and one sister.

A visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., followed by funeral services at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 2, 2019, at the First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis with Pastor Harold Delbridge and Pastor Steve Talley officiating.

Interment will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, February 4, 2019, at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Regional Health Home Plus Hospice.
