Last surviving carver of Mount Rushmore passes away

RAPID CITY, S.D. – The last remaining carver of Mount Rushmore National Memorial has passed away.

A family member of Nick Clifford says the 98-year-old historian passed away Saturday morning.

Clifford had wrote a book about his experiences and was signing copies of them as late as this past summer.

Clifford was under the supervision of Gutzon Borglum along with 400 workers as they sculpted the colossal 60-foot-high carvings of U-S Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln to represent the first 130 years of American history.

More information about his death and funeral services are anticipated later.
