Late winter storm slams region

Gary Matthews - March 14, 2019

STURGIS, S.D. - It took a while for the snow to start in Sturgis, but once it did, blizzard conditions settled on the city, and quickly, no travel advisories were issued.

Snow began around noon Wednesday in Sturgis, and city crews worked through the afternoon clearing main roads in town. By nightfall, those crews were expected to head home, and officials urged people to stay off the roads.

The blizzard warning continues for Sturgis until Thursday evening. That's because even though the snow is expected to end early Thursday morning, the 40-50 mile per hour winds are not expected to wane until Thursday night. That meant blowing and drifting snow was going to continue to be a problem.

Sturgis Public Works issued a snow emergency through Friday, meaning no cars parked on designated emergency snow routes. In a release, the city said snow removal will begin on designated Snow Routes, Emergency Routes and in the Downtown District. This will ensure that emergency vehicles can get to most general areas of the community. As conditions allow, crews will move to secondary priority routes and neighborhoods.

Meanwhile, Interstate 90 from the Wyoming line all the way to Chamberlain was shut down Wednesday afternoon. No travel advisories were up for most of western South Dakota.

In Rapid City, a semi truck got blown over at the corner of Catron Boulevard and Highway 16. The Pennington County Sheriff's Office says because their were no tow trucks out, the truck was going to remain there Wednesday night. Like Meade County, Pennington County also had no travel advised as did the city of Spearfish and all of Lawrence County.

Rapid City Regional Airport was also closed Wednesday as The National Weather Service reported a gust of 63 mph was recorded at the airport.
