Livestock, raptors, pony rides, exhibits all part of Meade County Fair

F.Ganje - July 23, 2019

STURGIS, SD – The best of an old-time county fair best describes the events coming to Sturgis this weekend.  For city and county residents – along with 4-H families – the Meade County Fair is the perfect place for city and rural neighbors to meet and greet, says Jennie Voight, Extension 4-H Youth Program Advisor.

“Whether you’re three or 93, there is something for everyone at the Meade County Fair,” says Voight.  “The Fair opens with activities, vendors and indoor exhibits on Friday, July 26  from 3pm-6pm. Then on Saturday, July 27, the fairgrounds are open from 8am-5pm.” She adds, “You won't find a more wholesome family event than the Meade County Fair and 4-H Achievement Days.”

Two full days of fair fun gets underway this weekend on the Meade County Fairgrounds and the Sturgis Brown High School campus.   Free kids activities throughout the day include a Frog Jumping & Turtle Racing Contest, Youth & Family Services sponsored activities, a Lego Challenge, and a Rocket Launch. All that and more is followed by a free Ag Appreciation barbeque and Northern Hills Ag Fest activities including Mutton Bustin,’ Calf Scramble, Dress-a-Calf and Dress-a-Sheep contest.

“The Meade County Fair Association works hard to make it a family event that is free or really low cost,” shares Voight, who adds that business and individual sponsorships are a big part of that.

“Every year we try something new and this year a Lego Challenge, a Sheep Shearing Demonstration, a presentation by the Black Hills Raptor Center, Pony Rides and the Brandon Delzer 5K Memorial Run/Walk are all new additions we’re pleased to bring to fair goers,” says Voight.

She continued, “We’re excited this year to be hosting the Brandon Delzer Legacy 5K Run/Walk. Brandon was a 4-H member so we are looking forward to honoring him,” says Voight.   The event will start/finish at the Sturgis Brown High School parking lot, July 27 with registration beginning at 7:30am. There will be male and female divisions for multiple age groups.. All proceeds from the race go to the Brandon Delzer Memorial Scholarship program.

The Fair continues through Saturday with livestock events, a Lego Challenge, Sheep Shearing Demonstration, Raptor Center Presentation, Bubble Gum Blowing Contest,  the popular Ice Cream Social and Pie Auction.  The Meade County Premium Livestock Sale gets underway at 3:30pm.

“We are so appreciative of the community support and donations that have come in for the fair this year,” says Voight.  “We hope people come out and take part in all the fun activities that kind of support makes possible.”
