Pennington County emergency staff meet Tuesday to discuss the upcoming storm.

Local officials prepare for winter storm

News Staff - March 13, 2019

STURGIS, S.D. - Officials in Pennington and Meade County spent Tuesday working on preparations for a possible blizzard to hit western South Dakota Wednesday.

Meade County decided to close its offices for Wednesday. The City of Sturgis will also close their office Wednesday and there will be no school in the Meade 46-1 School District.

Law enforcement in Sturgis say they will continue on the job as well as county dispatchers and jail staff.

The county highway department will be staffed as conditions permit. Roads will be cleared when it is safe.

The same situation exists with the Sturgis Public Works Dept.

Public Works Director Rick Bush told Meade County Town Hall that residents along snow removal routes need  to keep vehicles off the roadway or they will be ticketed.

Meanwhile, in Rapid City all public schools, city and county offices and Rapid Transit Services are closed on Wednesday.

Rapid City officials are learning from experience, using some new equipment after learning from the winter storm in October 2013. The fire department is bringing out a vehicle called a Haaglund. It can rescue up to 15 people at a time.

The Black Hills Snow Mobile Association is also joining the storm rescue team. About 15 to 25 snow mobiles will be able to rescue people in the Rapid City area.

Road closings will be announced by the Department of Transportation throughout Wednesday and Thursday. But there are already plans to close I-90 on Wednesday.
