March hearing set to possibly make decison on Jackpine Gypsies, campground annexation

STURGIS, S.D. – A March 2nd public hearing has been set for the Sturgis City Council to decide whether or not a historic piece of property finally becomes a part of Sturgis.

On Monday, the council passed a Resolution of Intent to annex the Jackpine Gypsies property. The property is surrounded by the city of Sturgis and already receives municipal water. Because it is surrounded by the city, it also receives emergency medical services and can only be accessed by driving on city-maintained roads. Furthermore, the city says wastewater services are readily available to the property as are garbage services.

At Monday night’s hearing Jackpine Gypsies Board Chairman Brett Winsell says they are concerned about the potential for increased taxes and regulations if the historic property is annexed into the city.

City leaders understand Winsell’s concerns, but say the city’s policy has been to ensure all areas receiving municipal services are a part of of the city of Sturgis. This policy is consistent with the first basis of annexation authorized by state statute.

It’s not the only property being considered. The city will also hold a public hearing March 2 to annex in the Big Rig Campground on Dolan Creek Road.

The campground also has publicly stated they oppose being annexed into the city.
