Marlyn Bernice Hansen

Marlyn Bernice Hansen

Marlyn Bernice Hansen

- December 4, 2020

Marlyn Bernice Hansen passed on Wednesday, December 2, 2020 at her home outside Sturgis, SD. She was determined she would not be robbed of her family in her final days and left this world surrounded in love.

Marlyn was born on July 9, 1941 in Dupree, SD to Claude and Eleanor (Davick) Lowe. The second eldest of eight, she was raised on a ranch near Coal Springs, SD. She had many fond memories of growing up on the prairie.

She graduated from Faith High School in 1959, where she had met her high school sweetheart, Carl Robert. She went to Black Hills State Teaching College one summer, where she received her teaching certificate and then proceeded to teach for 2 years at a country school in Corson County. Carl maintains she was searching for a good-looking fella, but settled for him on a bet. After his first enlistment, he came home and asked her to a dance, where he then asked her to marry him, and to his surprise she said yes. 59 years later, as he retells this story, he's just as amazed.

Marlyn and Robert toured several continents together after his re-enlistment in the Army, building their family along the way. Their daughter, Peggy, was born at Tinker AFB, OK. Their son, Dennis, was born on Fort Buckner, Okinawa. Their third child, Zelda, was born at Balboa NAS, in San Diego. Marlyn enjoyed her time overseas, but enjoyed being home near her family, more.

Marlyn took over as Robert's commanding officer after he retired in 1978. She took over as the head of Hansen Trucking. They ran trucks for close to 30 years, with her working logistics and Robert following orders. During this time living outside of Sturgis, she also enjoyed her little farm, where she raised chickens, pigs, her family horse, Pal, and her milk cow, Bossy. Gardening was another favorite hobby of hers. She loved taking everyone around her flowers and all were amazed at the plants seeping out of the beds.

Marlyn loved spending time with her family and friends, long chatty phone calls from her sisters, and large family get-togethers; the more, the merrier. She was in her element in a crowd, everybody was fed, nobody left hungry.

Marlyn was always available to her loved ones. Whether she was offering encouragement or celebrating their triumphs, laughing with them over a failed endeavor, or even taking them to task, she managed to make everybody feel so extraordinarily important.

Many will miss those long phone calls, the way her eyes lit up when she was bragging about her loved ones, and the unexpected sass.

She is survived by her husband, Carl Robert Hansen; daughter, Peggy (Dennis) Maliske; son, Dennis (Lori) Hansen; daughter, Zelda Anderson; grandchildren, Richard, Charlene, Wyatt, Desarae (Shane), Destiny, Emily, Carolina, Lucas, Nick, LeeAnne, Shelby, and Gavin; 11 great-grandchildren; sisters, Darlys (Lenny) Hofer, Lucy Honeycutt, Sandy (Jim) Blair, Kathy (Brad) Kling, and Cheri (David) Crissman; and countless nieces and nephews.

Marlyn was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Melvin Lowe; her sister, Karon Palmer; and her son-in-law; Allen Nohava.

An informal celebration of life for Marlyn will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 6, 2020 at Carl and Maryln’s home north of Sturgis. The family welcomes people to come and go, telling stories and remembering this amazing woman who has touched so many lives. A future interment will be announced.

The family of Marlyn Hansen would like to give their heartfelt thanks to her long-term provider, Dr. Julie Raymond, her surgeon, Dr. Bergstrom, and the fantastic staff on the 6th floor of Monument Health in Rapid City. Your dedication to Marlyn in her final days was greatly appreciated and will never be forgotten.
