Mary J (Meisel) Hansen died January 1, 2019 at the Lead-Deadwood Regional Hospital in Deadwood, SD.

She was born September 22, 1927 to Lewis and Pauline (Dolderer) Meisel at their home near Selfridge, ND. She attended country schools in the area. Growing up, she helped her mother with her younger brothers and sisters and many other chores around the house. Later on she took care of a flock of sheep. 

Mary married Philip Vetter on December 1, 1950 in Sturgis, SD. They lived in the Lead/Deadwood area in SD until his death in 1968. She later married Carrol Hansen in April of 1970 and they moved to Spearfish, SD. 

On Tuesdays she went to the Tree House Café where she would go and get her hair fixed and would enjoy visiting with many of the people she met during lunch.  Over the years she enjoyed working on many different kinds of crafts, bead working, crocheting, other crafts projects, reading and coloring in the adult coloring books. She also enjoyed time visiting with her family and friends that came to see her and she loved her orchards of different colors that filled her house. 

Mary is survived by two brothers, Martin Meisel of Overbrook Kansas and F. James Meisel of Grand Forks, ND; two sisters, Sr. M. Emily Meisel O.S.B. of Watertown, SD and Pauline “Polly” West of Deadwood, SD and numerous nieces and nephews. 

Mary is preceded in death by her parents, husbands, Philip Vetter and Carrol Hansen; brothers, Carl, Bob, and George Meisel; sister-in-law, Francis Meisel; brother-in-law Mike West; nephews, Paul Meisel, Jimmy Meisel, Willie West, and Donald West and cousin, Erika Laffrey

Memorial services will be at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at the United Methodist Church in Spearfish. Inurnment will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
