Maxine Lorraine Steiger

Maxine Lorraine Steiger

Maxine Lorraine Steiger

- June 18, 2020

Maxine Lorraine Steiger was born March 6, 1934, at Mosher, SD, to Clio and Elaine (Neuhaus) Vesley.  She attended rural grade school and graduated from Winner High School in 1951.

She married Kenneth M. Steiger in Witten, SD.  They had three children: Richard, Debra, and Rock.  After Kenny was discharged from the U.S. Navy in 1954, they lived in Winner and then in Rapid City until 1964, when they moved to Hot Springs to operate the Silver Dollar Tavern.  In 1971, the family moved to Sturgis and purchased the Night Owl Tavern and Leonard’s Place.

In 1972, the family endured the loss of Kenny following a short illness and their son, Richie, as the result of a car accident.

Mickey continued to operate the businesses until she sold them in the 1980's.  She worked at Gunner’s Lounge as a server for many years up until her health forced her to retire in 1990.

Mickey’s greatest joy was her grandchildren.  She was blessed with her first grandson, Christopher Bruse, in the fall of 1988.  Then the twins, Tanner and Dalton Steiger, arrived in 1998.  Her grandkids were the apple of her eye; she loved spoiling them and spending endless time with them.

Gifts were an important part of her life. She loved getting them, but she loved wrapping and giving them even more. She never missed an opportunity to send a well-thought-out gift for any occasion or sometimes simply because she saw something worth gifting.
After her retirement Maxine became a member of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW.  You could find her at the Sturgis Vet’s Club daily enjoying her diet cokes and visits with Veterans and many others.  Something she enjoyed looking forward to every fall was attending her annual class reunion with her brother and sister in Winner, SD.

Mickey was admitted into Sturgis Care Center in 2011, where she resided until her passing on May 24, 2020, at the age of 86.  Mickey’s family is forever grateful and wishes to thank all the wonderful caregivers that looked after our Mom, Grandma, Sister, and Aunt over the past nine years.

Survivors include her son, Rocky Steiger (Brenda) of Sturgis, SD; grandsons, Tanner and Dalton Steiger, of Sturgis, SD; Chris Bruse (Ally Reed) of Gillette, WY; great-grandson, Abel Bruse, of Gillette, WY; sister, Bonnie Wann of Riverside, CA; niece, Bernadette Merrill of  Riverside, CA; nephews, Con Wann, Riverside, CA, and Don Fink, Baker, OR; and great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth; son, Richard; daughter, Debra; her parents, Clio Noy and Elaine Christine Neuhaus Vesely; sisters, Clione ‘Toni’ and Marilyn ‘Ves’ Vesely; and brother, Donald Vesely.

The family will honor Mickey’s wishes no services will be held.
