Meade 46-1 School Board continues discussion on back to school plan

STURGIS, S.D. – The Meade 46-1 School Board held a special meeting Monday to continue discussion on their back to school plan.

The district is still aiming for September 8 as the first day of school.

Under the back to school plan, the district states they will start with an in-person learning model, but understands with the COVID-19 situation, they will take prudent steps to keep the schools as safe as they can.

Board members agree the plan will likely change over time as the COVID-19 situation changes. They will also be keeping a close eye on the number of cases that are realized after the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is done.

Board members say there will likely be outbreaks, creating cycles through which “we move from in-person to remote learning for some time.”

The district will run on a three-phased plan, with Phase One indicating no cases and in-person learning at all district buildings.  A Phase Two approach indicates isolated cases in a school building and a Phase Three indicates substantial cases, with the possible closure of some or all buildings.

The district is providing an option for students to enroll in an online learning program when parents are not comfortable having their child or children attend school for in-person classroom instruction.

Registration for the online learning option will open August 3rd and remain open through August 17th, 2020.
