Meade County offices open but social distancing; Butte County offices remain closed to public

STURGIS, S.D. – Meade County Commissioners met in special session on Friday to discuss continuing operations at the county offices in response to the COVID-19 situation.

Some county’s have closed their offices to the walk-in public and are conducting business via mail, email and telephone.

Meade County Commissioners took no action on doing the same, and will continue as they have been — keeping county offices open, but practicing social distancing and asking the public to please conduct business via phone, mail or email. They further encourage those who are most susceptible to the virus to conduct any business using phone, mail or email.

Surrounding counties have seen some community spread the virus — such as Lawrence County, show has 9 positive tests for COVID-19 as of Sunday.

Meade County, however, has only reported the one positive COVID-19 test, and that person has since recovered.

However, since the virus doesn’t recognize county lines, commissioners know it is likely more cases will pop up in Meade County.

Meanwhile, in Butte County, administrative offices will remain closed to the public until at least April 30.

The county authorized the temporary closure to the public of the county’s administrative offices through April 6 in response to the COVID-19 outbreak.

On Thursday, county officials recommended that closure continue through the end of the month.

This includes the offices of treasurer, auditor, equalization and register of deeds.

The offices will continue to be staffed to assist the public, but solely via telephone, email and mail.
