New COVID-19 cases total 297 Wednesday, state hits new high for hospitalizations

STURGIS, S.D. – In their Wednesday update, state health officials reported eight new COVID-19 related deaths, a new daily high for hospitalizations and nearly 300 new cases of the virus.

The update continues to show a surge in South Dakota as it remains near the top for the number of cases per 100,000 residents over the past 7 days.

Of the deaths reported on Wednesday, two people were in the 40-49 age range, one person was in the 70-79 age range and five people were in the 80+ age range. The eight new deaths were reported in the following counties: two in Minnehaha, one in Pennington, one in Lake, one in Clay, one in Hughes, one in Yankton and one in Brookings County.

The total number of new cases was 297 and the number of people hospitalized due to the virus climbed another 6 Wednesday to 139. That sets a new single-day high for South Dakota after yesterday’s record of 133.

The Black Hills area saw 64 new COVID-19 cases, with Pennington County reporting the most with 21. The new case load sends the cumulative total to 1,862 with 314 active cases. The active cases are down 4 today in Pennington.

Both Meade and Lawrence County reported 11 new cases. Meade’s total reaches 416 today with 90 active cases. Active cases are up 7 in Meade. The cumulative total in Lawrence County climbs to 301 with 56 active cases.

Custer reported 8 new COVID-19 cases Wednesday, sending their total to 163 with 57 active. Butte added 4 new cases to give them a total of 69 with 15 active and Fall River had 2 new cases for a cumulative total of 79 and 16 active cases.

Oglala Lakota added 7 new cases Wednesday for a total of 213 with 21 active.

Total cases across West River Wednesday were 93. The remaining 204 were East River.

After falling yesterday, the statewide active caseload is up 56 today to 2,442.

With the 8 new deaths today, the state’s total number of COVID-19 related deaths reached 192.

There were 3,559 tests performed for the latest 24-hour update.
