New Indian Motorcycle model celebrates silver mining in Black Hills

News Staff - March 29, 2018

STURGIS, SD - Everyone who knows Indian Motorcycle lore knows the story of C.F. "Pappy" Hoel, the Sturgis Indian Motorcycle dealer. In 1936, Hoel purchased an Indian franchise and opened his motorcycle shop on Junction Avenue in Sturgis. The following year, he co-founded the Jackpine Gypsies Motorcycle Club. It was clear that motorcycle culture was ingrained in Pappy as a racer, motorcycle dealer, and race promoter.  Those early races by the Jackpine Gypsies started in 1938  gave rise to the iconic Sturgis motorcycle rally.

Indian has re-established itself as a major player in Sturgis, challenging the dominance Harley-Davidson motorcycles have held for decades.  Since its initial store opening in 2014 in Sturgis, the popular franchise as added another new 22,000 square foot facility.

This year, instead of ‘there’s gold in them ‘thar hills,’ the venerable bike maker has unveiled something in silver for 2018.  Meet the 2018 Indian Chieftain Elite -  a limited release of only 350. The highlight is the paint. Inspired by the silver mines in the Black Hills. Indian says each Chieftain Elite took nearly 25 hours and 12 gallons of paint to complete. A team of experts masked the bodywork, laid the graphics, and hand-sprayed each Chieftain Elite. Due to the level of human touch, no two bikes are exactly the same.

The bagger boasts an award winning V-twin motor, that delivers 119 pounds per square foot of torque; a seven-inch glove compatible touchscreen display; Pinnacle mirrors, aluminum billet floorboard, genuine leather seats, and a tinted flare windshield as standard, along with a package of customizable upgrades and add-ons.

“Whether cruising around the city or touring the country backroads, the 2018 Chieftain Elite delivers on its promise of being the best bagger that money can buy,” said Reid Wilson, Senior Director of Marketing and Product Planning for Indian Motorcycle.  “This bike was born to turn heads and provide an unmatched riding experience with all of the premium amenities included.”
