New Year’s Day historically quiet weather-wise in Rapid City

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Officials reopened I-90 yesterday as the latest winter storm exited the region.

As the storm moves on, forecasters are expecting a rather quiet New Year’s Day.

The National Weather Service in Rapid City says very little snow has fallen on January 1st for the past decade. The record high for Rapid City on New Year’s Day is 64, set twice, in 1998 and 1939. The coldest day was -22 in 1924.

The average high for Rapid City on the first day of the year is 37 and the average low is 12.
