New high for active cases, 9 new deaths as COVID-19 cases continue to surge

STURGIS, S.D. – COVID-19 cases continue to surge across South Dakota as the state realized another high of active cases Saturday.

In their daily report, health officials reported 732 new cases. Of those, 690 have been confirmed and 42 are considered probable through antigen tests.

The active number of cases rose another 345 today to 5,533 – indicating new cases are outpacing recoveries across the state.

The state’s hospitalization rate didn’t move today – remaining at 267 for a second day.

It was another deadly 24-hours, however. The state reported 9 new COVID-19 related deaths.

New cases around the Black Hills area totaled 131 with Pennington County accounting for 62 of them. The active cases in Pennington County are up 20 today to 606. The cumulative total is now 3,063.

Lawrence County saw 17 new cases Saturday, raising their cumulative total to 550 with 120 remaining active.

Meade County reported 7 new cases, sending the cumulative total to 691 with 132 active.

Butte County added 8 new cases today, sending their cumulative total to 161 with 46 active.

Other Black Hills area new cases include 29 in Oglala Lakota, 6 in Fall River and 2 in Custer.

Across all of West River, there were 164 new cases, including 6 each in Todd and Bennett, 4 each in Tripp and Dewey, 3 each in Corson, Lyman and Gregory, 2 in Jackson and one each in Harding and Stanley counties.
