New school hosts open house; will host head of Dept of Education Tuesday night

Gary Matthews & News Staff - September 10, 2019

STURGIS, S.D. – The Meade 46-1 School District held an open house at the new Central Meade County School in Union Center last night.

The new school will house students from the rural areas, including Enning and Union Center.

Meade 46-1 School Superintendent Jeff Simmons says the new school was needed and the school will be beneficial for the entire community.

Parents also agreed the new merge will avoid them having to travel to separate locations if they have more than one child in different grades, especially during winter.

With the new school being adjacent to Central Meade County Community Center, students will not have to go far for extracurricular activities.

The Meade 46-1 School Board held their monthly meeting following last night’s open house at the new school. They will meet for a special session tonight at the school as the head of the South Dakota Department of Education comes to visit to hear about a proposal for a separate, rural school district.

Three members of the Meade 46-1 School board are from the rural area and they have been vocal about their concerns of underfunding of the rural schools.

Tonight’s meeting begins at 6:00 p.m. at the new Central Meade County School.
