North Dakota volunteers help set up hurricane shelters

The Associated Press - September 13, 2018

BISMARCK, N.D. - Some North Dakota volunteers are on their way to the Carolinas to provide help as Hurricane Florence makes its way toward land.

The American Red Cross Dakota Region says 17 people left Bismarck Wednesday in three disaster response vehicles to help those in North and South Carolina impacted by the hurricane. Florence has now reached North Carolina's barrier islands as the massive storm bears down on the Southeastern coastline.

KXMB-TV reports Western North Dakota Red Cross disaster program manager Rob Stotz says with extensive flooding those that have evacuated may not have a home to return to, so volunteers will be staffing shelters.

The Red Cross is estimating that as many as 100,000 people may need emergency shelter once the storm passes.
